A Tough Love Lesson (Plus, Why Perfectionism is Overrated)

If your clients get stuck in all-or-nothing thinking, this mindset shift will change everything. I was checking in with a client about why she had missed her third workout last week, a goal we’d been working on together. Here's the email back I sent her with some tough love.
Happy 2-Tips Tuesday!
Here are two ideas to consider this week.

1. Don’t Let “Optimal” Get in the Way of “Beneficial”
I was checking in with a client about why she had missed her third workout last week, a goal we’d been working on together. Maybe she caught that flu that’s been going around? I wondered.
She wrote back, frustrated: “Work has kept me late, so I only had 15 minutes left of my 60-minute workout… so I skipped it. If I can’t do it right, what’s the point?”
Here’s what I sent back:
Tough love time. Your mindset needs an upgrade.
You need to stop thinking like an on/off light switch and start using a dimmer switch. This all-or-nothing mindset is keeping you stuck.
When it comes to your health, anything above zero compounds positively.
So stop letting “optimal” get in the way of a beneficial action.
✅ Do a shorter 15-minute workout.
✅ Add some veggies to a takeout meal.
✅ Accept less-than-perfect, but good enough choices.
Your perfectionism is hurting you more than it’s helping. Instead of flipping the switch off, just dim the lights and keep going.
Life is hectic. Get comfortable with less-than-perfect actions that still move you toward your goals. Just keep the light on, even if it’s dim!
I send messages like this to my clients all the time. Now, I’m passing it on to you, so you can help your clients stop getting in their own way.
2. Success Comes from Small Efforts
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”
