How Motivation Really Works

Many coaches believe part of their job is to help motivate their clients to make healthier choices. WRONG! Motivation *actually* works in the opposite way you think it would.

Happy 2-Tips Tuesday!

Here are two ideas to consider this week.

By Jennifer Broxterman, RD

1. Motivation is BS πŸ’©

Many coaches believe part of their job is to help motivate their clients to make healthier choices.

WRONG ❌

Don’t enable this incorrect viewpoint – it’s faulty and broken. Motivation ➑️ Action ❌

Motivation *actually* works like this. Action ➑️ Motivation  βœ…

Your job as a coach is to help your clients figure out their next small step forward, and to only focus on that next step.

β€’ Action dismantles analysis paralysis.

β€’ Action crushes all-or-nothing thinking.

β€’ Action breaks the stagnation cycle.

β€’ Action creates small wins, which increases motivation, which leads to further action.

2. Quote: On Getting Started

β€œYou don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.”
