My Touchdown Strategy for Conferences
Here is everything I wrote down at the Coach Catalyst SuperCoach Summit 2024. With so many amazing speakers presenting at the event, I switched my note-taking over to my "touchdown strategy" whenever I attend a conference.
Happy 2-Tips Tuesday!
Here are two ideas to consider this week.
By Jennifer Broxterman, RD
1. Coach Catalyst SuperCoach Summit 2024
Woza! This past weekend I had the honor of speaking at the Coach Catalyst SuperCoach Summit just outside of Washington, DC, where I got to share the importance of asking better questions, and also the impact that gamification has on helping people change their habits.
One tip I shared was,
“Beginners complicate, experts simplify.”
So I suggested everyone write:
💡 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣ 💡
1.
2.
3.
… at the very top of their paper. As soon as you hear a valuable idea, write it down in 1 of those 3 spots. Remember, 3 is the max – sometimes 1-2 great ideas is enough per speaker.
Instead of overwhelming yourself with too much to do when the conference is over, you’ll have a short, clear list to act on and share with your clients.
This is my “touchdown strategy” for conferences.
Picture yourself as a quarterback holding a football, scanning the field. It’s much easier to score a touchdown with 1 football vs. trying to manage 20 different balls and strategic plays all at once.
Information → Implementation → Touchdown
🏈 Take one idea
🏈 Implement it fully
🏈 Touchdown!
Here are my 3-point notes from the 2024 SuperCoach Summit.
Jen Broxterman - Prosper Nutrition Coaching
@prosper_nc
1. Motivational interviewing - ask powerful questions
“Fill me in. What’s important about your past that you think I should know more about?”
“What’s different about losing weight this time?”
“What’s at stake if things don’t change?”
“What do you see when you look in the mirror?”
“What are some other choices you can make?”
2. Nutrition Coaching Games: be more FUN + PLAYFUL + CURIOUS
3. Listen way more than you speak 👂👄👂(2 ears, 1 mouth ratio)
Ali Gilbert - Men’s Health Coach
@thealigilbert
1. Sales Question: “I need to talk to my spouse.” Reply: “Do you need to ask permission, or do you need to speak with them about getting their support?”
2. Funny joke: How men shower - armpits + groin.
Jeb Stuart Johnston - Freedom from Food Obsession
@jebstuartjohnston
1. Distress tolerance - help your clients improve this.
2. Self-sabotage: it’s just an old pattern of behavior you’re using to protect yourself so you can feel comfortable and safe (free yourself from the guilt and shame).
Holly Rigsby - Anti-Aging Fitness Coach
@hollyjoirigsby
1. Community will follow you anywhere - make daily deposits.
2. Maintaining a community is a lot of work - be consistent and go all in.
Nichole Eaton - Rock Your Comeback
@nicholeeaton.xo
1. It’s not your fault, but it is your responsibility to fix your mindset if it’s not serving you.
2. Coaching Exercise: Write a thank you letter as though what you desire and how you want to feel has already happened, and you’re just saying thank you for it.
3. Clarity - Help clients look at what they want (vs. don’t want) with coaching prompts, “What if…” and “I’m willing to believe…”
Kane Sivesind - Communication (Coach Catalyst)
@kanesivesind
1. C-S-T communication = Clear, Simple, Timely
2. Communication is 7% verbal, 38% vocal (tonal, melody), and 55% non-verbal (body language). Text messages miss 93% of the communication cues, so use video and audio.
3. ChatGPT Prompt: Take the following message I’m sending to my client, and improve it for clarity, simplicity, and comprehension.
Simona Costantini - Podcaster
@simona__costantini
1. Podcast framework: POD
P = position yourself as an expert
O = optimize your engagement (consistency, strategic partnerships)
D = diversify and monetize (create multiple revenue streams from your growing brand)
Dr. Josh Funk - Rehab 2 Perform
@drjoshfunk
1. Fail fast - normalize failure, extract the lesson, and move on
2. 360 Degree Feedback (end of year surveys vs. performance reviews): workplace happiness, work-life balance, review yourself, review the company, review 3 peers
Dr. Sean Pastuch - Active Life
@drseanpastuch
1. Business growth will follow personal growth. Money is just a result.
2. Compromise = low energy way to deal with conflict.
3. Three questions to ask people:
“What are you most excited about right now?”
"What’s something you’ve recently changed your mind about?”
"What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in the last 5 years?”
Overarching Theme From All Speakers:
1. Ask more questions, talk less
2. Use video
3. Relationships matter, get around the right people
2. Reminder from Coach Kav
“Keep hanging out with people who want you to win.”
– Gary Vaynerchuk
Justin Kavanaugh (@coachkav) was one of the SuperCoach event organizers, and this quote he shared recently couldn’t have been more true. He and the Coach Catalyst team packed the room full of people who wanted you to win.
This is your reminder to keep your inner circle tight + bright with rockstar humans. 👊 🌟
